9 Volt Batteries

We included a 9-Volt battery
so that you may try CE-3 as soon as you receive it.

The battery that we have included is a regular "9-Volts Battery". This is not one of the best or the cheapest on the market. If your budget permits, the best is to use "Duracell Alkaline Battery".

The only way to compare batteries, is to compare their Amp-Hours. Unfortunately none of the consumer batteries have their "Amp-Hours" listed.  A typical "Good" 9-Volts Alkaline battery would have approximately 0.60 Amp-Hours.

The other alternative is to compare the battery's total mass. This will give some indication of the Amp-Hours differences. A battery with a very low weight is obviously a bummer.

Here are some examples, (approximately 8 Grams is housing & contacts)
   - Alkaline Duracell battery   -  approximately 46 Grams.

- Battery that we provide     -  approximately 36 Grams.

When a "Good" Alkaline battery is used,  CE-3C will run, with sensors turned on, for approximately 50 hours. If sensors are turned off, data review use only, then it will run for approximately 115 hours. When PC is connected to CE-3C, the time is further reduced by 5%.

Please note: the brighter the light the more power is required. For example:
   - Dim Light (2 x 25 watt bulbs, 2-feet up, with diffusers), or a very Cloudy Dark Sky, battery life is about 58 hours.
   - Bright Light (2 x 100 watt bulbs, 2-feet up, with diffusers) or very Bright White Clouds, battery life is about 40 hours.
   - Bright Sun Directly Overhead - With diffusers, battery life is about 30 hours.
If sensors are turned off, light has no effect on the power consumption.
When diffusers are used, the bulbs do not have to be directly over the sensors,
they can be off by a couple of inches.

Indoor light setup

Install diffusers supplied with CE-3. Mount a 40 Watts frosted light bulb over each diffuser.
The bulbs are to be placed 28 inches from the chronograph or about 14 inches from the diffuser, this provides plenty of shooting clearance and a safe distance for the light bulbs.
With this setup the alkaline battery should last approximately 48 hours.
